Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis is set in Los Angeles in the early 1980's. This coolly mesmerizing novel is a raw, powerful portrait
of a lost generation who have experienced sex, drugs, and disaffection at too early an age, in a world shaped by casual nihilism, passivity, and too much money a place devoid of feeling or hope.
Movie of the Week
Hunger was written by Enda Walsh and Steve McQueen, who also directed. The film follows life in the Maze Prison, Northern Ireland with an interpretation of the highly emotive events surrounding the 1981 IRA Hunger Strike, led by Bobby Sands. With an epic eye for detail, the film provides a timely exploration of what happens when body and mind are pushed to the uttermost limit.

30 Seconds to Mars Stay Home for 'Kings and Queens' Video
Leto's brought that cinematic eye back for 'Kings and Queens,' the first clip from the band's forthcoming 'This Is War' album. Unlike their previous efforts, this video isn't very worldly. On their breakthrough album, 'A Beautiful Lie,' Leto and his bandmates became the first rock group ever to film a clip in China with the track 'From Yesterday.' They followed that up with a visit to the Arctic for the short film accompanying the title track, and this time they stayed home. "It's a lyrical and slightly metaphorical surreal journey through the city of Angels, from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica Pier," Leto says.
Despite all the groundbreaking travels of the last album, Leto wasn't disappointed by not commanding a space station or filming in a submarine. "We like to create an adventure and this has been an adventure. It's brought it to a place we haven't been before, even in our own city," he says. "It's so great. This is what we were supposed to do. And I doubted the idea up until the very last minute, but the process has been phenomenal."
And it's been just as interesting as prior 30 Seconds videos, even if it's more akin to Fellini than Jules Verne. From the scenic view of the city's skyline, the cast, crew and other members wrapped up and headed to downtown L.A. for scenes involving a horse and a fire thrower, among others. The majority of the video, however, involves biking after dark. "It's part Pied Piper, part chaotic circus and it rests upon the wonderful, beautiful individuals and amazing community of fixed-gear, masked night bike riders," Leto says. "I do the rides as well. A friend of mine is doing Critical Mass and another friend is doing Crank Mob, these groups of riders that get together and kind of reclaim public spaces and take over the streets in several cities around America."
The filming of the video comes a week after the single has hit radio, where it's already getting great response. But after two years of working on the album, Leto is just glad there's music out for fans. "I can't believe the single's out," he says. "It's kind of a magical time right now. There's closure when you hear it on the radio 'cause you're giving it away. You're done."

Thank you so much to all the riders for coming out and joining us for the shoot. Your spirit, individuality and amazing community made this an unforgettable experience. The images we have seen so far are beyond amazing and that is all because of your participation.
We were blown away by the amount of people who showed up to join us. Positive attitudes, creative contributions, and good old fun prevailed.
From the very first ride over the bridge into downtown we knew we were in for an adventure. Taking over the streets, flying over the hill down into Santa Monica Pier, and owning Hollywood Blvd. were all incredible experiences. We were glad to have shared them with this wonderful group of people and their amazing bikes.
Can't wait to see you out there on the next ride.

Jared Leto Gets Fired Up Over Gay Marriage
What's got Jared Leto starting fires these days?
Gay marriage.
The actor-musician is helping raise money for gay rights group FAIR by taking part in an online auction of celebrity-signed prints of artist Shepard Fairey's "Defend Equality Love Unites," a poster in support of gay marriage.
But Leto did more than just doodle his autograph...
After writing out the actual language of the Proposition 8 ballot initiative on the back of his Fairey print, he burned it and placed the ashes in a clear glass urn with the inscription, "Here lies within, the remains of Proposition 8, may it rest in peace." Then he signed, dated and topped it with a red ribbon.

30 Seconds To Mars Go Epic With 'Kings And Queens' Video Band is shooting massive bike rides...
30 Seconds To Mars Go Epic With 'Kings And Queens' Video
Band is shooting massive bike rides, L.A. landmarks and more over the course of several nights.
30 Seconds to Mars are not exactly what you'd call a subtle rock band. Their This Is War album (due December 8) features songs written in Berlin and recorded in Hawaii (with Kanye West), guest vocals from fans recorded at so-called "summits" around the globe, and appearances by Tibetan monks and Iranian Twitterers, to name just a few.
So, it's not surprising to learn that the video for War's first single, "Kings and Queens," has become a gigantic event too. In fact, 30STM were no longer even referring to it as a video. It's a short film now.
"Our rule as a band is, when we do videos — which, I don't often think of them as videos, more as short films — let's make sure the experience is amazing," frontman Jared Leto explained. "We've been to China in the past. We've been to the Arctic, so really, to do this video, in one way, was much simpler ... but it's also been more of a challenge. It's still equally huge in its own way."
No, "Kings and Queens" wasn't shot in China (like their "From Yesterday" clip was) or on the polar ice caps (like "A Beautiful Lie"), but it's no less of an epic undertaking. They have been filming over the course of several nights in and around some of Los Angeles' most iconic landmarks, recruiting scores of extras and all manner of surrealist street performers. On Monday night, for example, 30STM had taken over the famed Santa Monica Pier and, along with an army of fixed-gear bikers, were filming a segment called "The Ride," which is just a portion of the "Kings and Queens" short film, a spokesperson for the band explained later.
We know, we're confused too. Not to mention a tad bit overwhelmed. After all, music videos aren't usually shot on this kind of scope and scale anymore. But 30 Seconds to Mars aren't in the business of making music videos these days.
"We're doing all-night shoots. That was my big, dumb idea, to shoot at night," Leto said. "But I think this city is a beautiful place at night, and we have these empty streets, and it's kind of a haunting, forgotten landscape ... very serene. It's about reclaiming public spaces.
"It's been an incredible adventure, but it's also been really difficult, because there are so many people, and we're shutting down streets of Los Angeles," he continued. "Downtown, bridges, some tunnels, Hollywood Boulevard, Santa Monica Pier, we'll be up on Mulholland [Drive], overlooking the city. But the idea, the night rides, I just had some friends that were doing Critical Mass and Crank Mob and People's Ride in L.A. And it's that sort of serendipitous thing, where people started talking to me about it in my life, and then my friend got a fixed gear, and then another friend of mine got a fixed gear. I thought the world was really interesting, and I thought it would be a really beautiful backdrop for the video."

30 Seconds To Mars Shutting Down Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood
In an attempt to break a world record or two and to capture images for their upcoming video for their new single, "Kings and Queens," 30 Seconds To Mars will be shutting down the world-famous Santa Monica Pier on the evening of October 12th. Additionally, they'll also be taking over Hollywood and Highland. What do they need from you to help them reach this insane accomplishment? Your bicycle!
For the past 12+ hours, I've been hanging out with 30 Seconds To Mars and a huge group of my fellow urban cyclists from all over Los Angeles to help the band shoot their music video "Kings and Queens." (I use "music video" lightly; it's much more like a short film.)
Over the course of 12 hours, all overnight, cyclists took over the Sixth Street Bridge, Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, and stormed the Second and Third Street tunnels under Bunker Hill. Don't believe me? Photographic proof, dudes.
(You can see the full gallery from the night right over here.)
Jared Leto, frontman for 30STM, was ecstatic about the turn-out for the first day of the shoot after the night's events were completed. "Thanks so much to all the riders that came out tonight," he said. "It was unforgettable and amazing and we are so thankful to you all!"
But if you live near LA and have a bicycle, you haven't missed out on the fun yet.
Tonight, the band will be taking over both the Santa Monica Pier and Hollywood and Highland. They're going to try to assemble the most people on bicycles on the pier and create the largest "circle of death" possible at Hollywood and Highland.
"[We are] shutting down santa monica pier," he said. "The goal is to get more riders on a pier than ever before. It will be the last shot of the film. Very epic and beautiful but we need the help from all the riders on the west side!"
He also gave me more information about what's going on in Hollywood. "We will then do what we hope will be the largest 'circle of death' ever recorded at Hollywood and Highland," he explained. "Then ride to La Brea. Short and sweet. Come out and join the chaos and fun!"
If you live and Los Angeles and would love to be a part of history (and a 30 Seconds To Mars video!), all you have to do is show up at Ocean and Colorado in Santa Monica at 4PM. You get that?

Lyrics of Kings and Queens.
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken
We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the phantoms of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
Into your lives
Hopeless and Taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and pain
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams
We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the Phantoms of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
The age of man is over
A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun
We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the Phantoms of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
We are the Kings
We are the Queens
We are the Kings
We are the Queens
From This Is War : Kings and Queens.
I HOPE YOU LOVE IT AS MUCH AS ME!

LETO DEFENDS RECORD LABEL WAR
30 SECONDS TO MARS frontman JARED LETO is proud the band battled against record giant EMI - and has vowed to do it again.
The rockers were sued by the parent company of their label Virgin Music for $30 million (£20 million) over claims they failed to produce an agreed number of albums.
They refused to buckle to the demands of industry bosses and fought back - and the case was eventually settled earlier this year (09).
Although part of the agreement is that the band does not discuss the details, Leto insists it was a battle worth fighting.
He tells Kerrang! magazine, "There were many, many f**king brutal days. We were dragged through the ringer. It was not an easy fight... It was an impossible battle, against a bigger, wealthier and stronger opponent.
"But we were fighting for very specific things; we were fighting for fairness, and the right to be treated as people rather than as a commodity. (People) say that there is no fight like the fight of the just. There wasn't a day went by that we questioned the choice we were making, which was to go to war. And if we had to go through it all again we would do it exactly the same."

30 Seconds To Mars
Back in business
It has been a hard year for 30 Seconds To Mars
But with a potentially disastrous legal dispute behind them and new album This Is War ready for it's November release, the trio reveal why they're fighting fit for their return...
For any band practicing their trade in the first decade of the 21st century, the most pressing question is this: what is the relationship between them and their audience? In an age when communications and technology are changing the shape of everything not made of concrete or steel, there are few more pressing issues for those whose living is made with songs and CDs. Today the speed of sound is quicker than ever it was; bands that have done nothing at all wrong can return from the briefest of hibernations only to discover that their audience has all but deserted them.
At some point during the recording of This Is War, 30 Seconds To Mars' appropriately titled, forthcoming third album, Jared Leto received a tweet from a young man based in Tehran. The Iranian had heard the news of the event the band describes as "the summit", where a number of fans gathered in a Los Angeles recording studio in order that their voices be included on the new album. It is a shame, said the Middle Easterner, that admirers who live far away from the City of Angels can't also join the army lending their voices.
Jared thought about this for a bit, realised he agreed and so came up with a "crazy idea" to rectify the situation. If his band -the line- up is completed by bassist Tomo Milicevic and drummer Shannon Leto, a man whose eyes sparkle with the flame of dark magic -were at all serious about the belief that their music is merely the engine that motor a much wider community (and, God, are they serious about this) then members of tha community from all over the world should be included on the upcoming CD. With this in mind he formulated the idea of having "an electronic summit" where "people from everywhere" could send their voices to 30 Seconds To Mars in order to be a part of something that, to it's creators at least, stretches much further than the eye can see.
How many people, exactly?
"Something like 60,000." Says Jared.
Like no big deal.
Blimey.
"Right. And it's something that has never been done before. The [ overall result ] is really, really powerfull. And it has everything to do with them, and nothing to do with us"
As if it weren't enough, 30 Seconds To Mars had another idea that would help make real their clames that the relationship between band an audience -clames that might otherwise sound jaded and mundane- were about more than mere customer care.
The band invited fans to send in fotographs of their own faces, images that will appear as the front cover artwork of This Is War, one face per album sleeve.
On the very day this beautifully berserk idea went public, 30 Seconds To Mars received 1,800 snapshots. The figure now stand at 2,000, the maxium amount agreed with Virgin, their record label (althought the band would like to double this number). The plan is to initially print one hundred CD booklets of each person's face; a website is being built in order that people may trade with others for the album that features their own image and there are also plans to release This Is War with artwork featuring people from different bands, not to mention other special guests.
" We might even have a special edition Barack Obama cover,"
Says Jared.
Really?
"Yes."
Really, really?
"As long as Barack doesn't mind.
We're going to ask anyway."
Back in the 1970s Kiss offered their fans the chance to win one of five polaroid pictures taken of the group without make-up , a state in which they had at that point never been seen. But once upon receiving their prize, the winning entrants that this was a photograph whosed picture lasted for just five minutes after being exposed to daylight. You could drive yourself mad attempting to think of a better idea than this, but 30 years on here is a band that has at least come close.
So, yes, 30 Seconds To Mars have spent a good deal of time thinking about the relationship that exists between band and audience, as well the question of what to do with the attention that is currently theirs.
The answer is this: everything.
Today the trio are in Manhattan, New York City.
Just days ago Jared was in Venice, attending that city's prestigious film festival, being interviewed by seven journalists at a time in order to promote Mr. Nobody, his first film role for more than two years.
Ask him which of this two hats he prefers wearing and he'll umm and aah for about an hour, before finally answering that "film-making in its purest for is a beautiful thing" but that it's "hard to argue with the process of recording songs and then playing those songs live".
In front of thousands of cheering people.
"Actually," he says, " I never think those people are cheering for us. In fact, i don't really hear them at all."
30 Seconds To Mars sit around a wobbly metal table on a patio that sits 14 floors above the human swirl of Midtown Manhattan . Below them, yellow Checker Cab Company cars nudge their way toward the intersection of 8th Avenue and 37th Street. For 20 full minutes a helicopter hovers motionless overhead, ominous in a sky coloured gunmetal grey. The constant whumping of its rotor blades injects this late afternoon liaison with the suggestion of something trublesome.
It's not the only thing. The members of 30STM are all today agreed upon one thing, that they are most relieved that their band is not 30 billion dollars out of pocket. . If it was, and it might well have been, today there would be no 30 Seconds To Mars,no interview, no nothing.
"There were many, many fucking brutal days," says Jared, " We were dragged through the ringer. It was not an easy fight."
This is what happened: The group were being sued by EMI (Virgin music's parent company) for, the claimant alleged, reneging on a promise to deliver three albums, as contractually agreed in 1999. The lawsuit was anulled earlier this year, but not before much energy and money had been to spent preparing for what Jared Leto now describes as " a noble fight".
The legal small print of the eventual settlement decrees that the defendants' are not permitted to speak about the specifics of the suit. However, bloodied but unbowed, 30 Seconds To Mars feels as if they have emerged from this skirmish with one proven point and their dignity intact.
"It was an impossible battle, against a bigger, wealthier and stonger opponent," the frontman says, "But we are fighting for very specific things; we were fighting for fairness, and the right to be treated as people rather than as a commodity. [People] say that there is no fight like the fight of the just. There wasn't a day went by [during litigation] that we questioned the choice we were making, which was to go to war.
And if we had to go through it all again, we would do it exactly the same."
Tomo and Shannon are each asked if they agree with the statement that has been made on their behalf. "Yeah," answers the bassist, without hesitation. The drummer waits longer before quickly and almost imperceptibly nodding his head.
How do you think EMI happened upon the figure of $30 million?
Jared smiles like a cartoon cat, playfully letting the question hang in the air. The rotor blades of the still present helicopter count the seconds ticking away.
"Well," he says, "Think about it."
So i think about it. Nothing.
"Okay," he says, "Well, how about this? Some journalists have claimed that the figure was $30 million because our name is 30 Seconds To Mars."
Really? Oh, come on, you've got to admire their style.
The singer stares back, as unmoved as a waxwork.
Apparently not, then.
"Well, all is said and done," he says, "This will be very important part of our story. I'm very proud of the fact that we didn't shy away from the battle. We could easily have kept our mouths shut and been good boys, grateful boys, happy to do we were told. But we said, "No, we want to fight for what's fair". And we stayed committed to that fight to the very end, until the point where we felt comfortable resolving [the issue]."
Who won, you or them?
"That depends on who you ask."
I'm asking you.
"Well, i don't like to put the words 'we won' out there," answers Jared. "I think there's a little too much ego in a statement such as that . But i will say this, if we had lost we wouldn't be sitting here talking to you today."
At least to an infrequent observer, Jared Leto appears to be a man whose mind is fuelled by a constant flurry of ideas. As if to supply evidence to this observation, he is struck by one somewhere in the midst of recounting his band's long months of struggle.
"Hey," he says to his bandmates, "do you know what we should have done? We should have covered the Sex Pistols' song , EMI. That would have been so cool!"
The song who which Jared refers happens to be the Pistols' best, a tune that seethes with jeering contempt at the then stuffy British record company who signed the Englishman only to quickly drop them, frightened half to death by the filth and the fury the group attracted. 'Blind acceptance is a sign', sings Johnny Rotten, his voice laced with the purest poison. 'Of stupid fools who stand in line, like EMI.EMI.EMI...'.
Jared Leto seems pleased with his idea.
Somehow, in the midst of all this turmoil, 30 Seconds To Mars continued to work on an album they insist was christened This Is War some time before they decided to head off into battle. From a melting pot of more than 100 composition they managed to settle in just one dozen.
"If you can't fashion 12 half decent songs from more than a 100 you should probably think about doing something else for a living", says the man who sometimes does something else for a living.
As well as the contributions of 60,000 fans in places as far removed as Albuquerque and Zurich, the album also features the talents of Kanye West (on the song Hurricane), as well as Shannon playing the taiko drum set that his brother bought him for Christmas. Not merely content to hit these large oriental drums with sticks, the elder Leto evern travelled to Southern China in order to learn how to properly play them.
When Jared says that 30 Seconds To Mars are "not the kind of band that can throw around millions of dollars defengind a lawsuit" the reason for this might be that they've spent most of their cash making This Is War. They even spent 18 months locating an order of Tibetan monks who they flew to Los Angeles in order that the band could record a blessing that beggins the album. Only on of the order spoke English, not fluently, while another held inside his head 10,000 chants, more than even the most commited football supporter. (Plus, it's a fairly safe bet that none of the Tibetan's chants contained the line 'you fat bastard, you ate all the pies...') During a break in the recording sessions, one of the monks was seen outside by the swimming pool scooping drowned bees from out of the water and placing their dead bodies gently on a secluded piece of grass.
"They were the real deal," says Tomo. "Those guys weren't faking it one bit."
It seems only fitting that a band that goes by the name 30 Seconds To Mars should so constantly aim to experience and utilise things that are not of their world. For them, the comfort zone is not at all comfortable, where they are never as good where they want to be. "Paitings are framed by canvas," says Jared, "that's their boundary. For me the boundary of an album is measured in time."
And it's not the only thing. As a few final answers are squeezed from the interview, Jared Leto, now indoors, glances quickly at his bandmates and says quietly, "We have to be somewhere".
Wherever this place is, it isn't here.
The three musitians make it to the ground floor before anyone else in this room, and within moments after saying his goodbyes the man who speaks for this unashamedly expensive band can be seen in conversation with the driver of a people carried parked by the pavement on West 37th Street.
Less than half a minute after this 30 Seconds To Mars are gone, their leader's eyes still trained on some distant horizon at which he will not, and should not, ever arrive.

Kerrang! Interview - 30 Seconds To Mars.
Interviewer: What are the chances of you telling us the title of the new album?
Jared: Probably not very good! I do have a working title for the album but i'm not kneen to let you know what is it. What happened before was that i had a working title for A Beautiful Lie, which i let become public; people got rather attached to it and then when i got it changed they were a bit upset. So i'll keep the working title to myself for now, if you don't mind.
I: When is the album due?
J: I think in some people's minds it's long past due. But we really take the approach and really remind each other, often, that it's done when it's done.
There are days that we are really kneen to get the thing finished so that we can get out on the road once again. But then there are other days where we get really involved into the whole process.
Yesterday, for example, i spent the whole day listening to one guitar track on one song. I can get a bit... a bit... er...
I: A bit Axl Rose?
J: No, no, no, not at all! I just get very specific and compulsive about the things i'm doing in the studio.
I: I'm going to ask the question again, only this time i want you to imagine that i'm armed. When is the album due?
J: I would be excited to have the record ready to share with people by the late spring, so let's go with that.
I: Do you have any song titles or other specific details you can share?
J: There are a couple of songs that have become important to us. One of those songs is called Kings & Queens; another is called Panacea. But when you start thinking about a record or talking about a record before it's finished, it's a bit like tasting each of the individual ingredients of a recipe you plan on cooking. You won't know how it will taste until it's ready, so what's the point of tasting it before it all comes together?
I: You have an audience that are quite possessive of you. Do you feel any responsibility to them or pressure from them when it comes to making a new album?
J: All i think is that there is a part of me that does want this community that has grown up around the idea of 30 Seconds To Mars to be excited and to be happy with the work that we've done... But i also think that it's can be dangerous in an artistic sense to get too caught up in what you believe your audience might want from your music. And anyway, for me, it's always myself that i have the hardest time pleasing, so once i've got the music to the point where it pleases me i can then only hope that it's good enough to please someone else who might later be listening.
I: Who will be getting a producer's credit on the album's sleevenotes?
J: Wow, well this is quite important news for us because we're all amazed that he agreed to do work for us, but the producer for this album is The Dark Lord himself, Sir Flood. For anyone who doesn't know, he has produced Nine Inch Niles, Smashing Pumpkings, U2, Depeche Mode... so much good stuff.
As a producer he makes each performer better; he makes you reach into yourself to find better answers and more creativity. And he does this just by being himself . He's helping us harness the album that we have inside our hearts and bring it out into the real world.
I: How has work on the album been affected by you guys being defendants in a $30 million [£20 million] lawsuit?
J: We're in lawsuit limbo land right now, which is weird. It's weird to think there's a $30 million dollar lawsuit [with record label, virgin] hanging over our heads, like we needed any more pressure now that we're finally making the follow up to A Beautiful Lie. There are some days when you don't think about it all and some days when it weighs heavily on your mind. But althought the high rollers in the glass offices really want to nail us to the wall, none of them can stop of us releasing a new album.
So we just soldier on.
